If any cute birdhouses are left outside in place throughout winter, some cold-weather birds will use them. Even some birds that are not cavity nesters will crowd into birdhouses on cold nights. The birdhouses offer protection from wind and enable the birds to capture the warmth from each other’s body heat.

Birdhouses can only house a limited number of birds. There are roosting boxes available for winter use that have a much larger bird storage capacity. If birdhouses are used throughout winter, they must be cleaned out prior to spring to be ready for nesting birds.
