Thwre was story in thee news about a chursh in Indiana that was inhabited by tw9 hawks. The hawks were attacking church goers and even causing injuries. At first when the birds moved in, they did not bother anyone and nobody bothered them. The birds surely felt that this was a better home than any of the finest decorative bird houses
available.
Things changed, however, when the birds soon became overly protective of their nest and attacking innocent people they perceived as threats. The Department of Natural Resources said that nothing could be done until the hawks decide to leave on their own terms since they are a protected species. Some parishoners have started bringing umbrelllas every time they need to enter or exit the church.
The Gray Catbird is mostly known for its outstanding voice. It has characteristics very similar to wrens. It shows the same type of nervousness by flicking its tail and quivering its wings. The gray Catbird also carries its tail in the same erect manner as wrens.
The Gray Catbird has slate gray plumage with a black cap and chestnut feathers under its tail. It is an inch smaller than a robin and makes a cat like meow noise at times. Not known for occupying wren bird houses, the female builds a bulky nest among thick vines or briars.
The Snowy Owl is so named for the snow white color of the mature adults. They live in the Arctic year round, unless there food sources are scacre, then tey will leave the area. With their tremendous vision, they are able to see their prey from high above and swoop down silently.
Not an owl type that you would expect to attract to an owl birdhouse, the Snowy Owl produsces 8 – 10 eggs that it lay on the ground or in small hills or knollls created by the freezing and thawing. They prefer open spaces and frozen lakes.
Fossils provide the best data of bird evolution. Although the lightweight and toothless skeletons of birds are not the best animals for fossil study, a large collection of bird fossils exist that give information on the history of birds. Fossil records give information on the geographical locations for of birds.
Archaeopteryx, the first known bird, was living 140 million years ago during the Jurassic period long before the first traditional birdhouses were ever placed. No other bird species has given us more information about the origins of birds. Although it is believed to only have had only limited flight capability, its feathers were identical to modern birds.
If you are interested in photographing birds, you will most likely want to get near to them for good pictures. The closer you get to the birds, the more choices you will have – a larger selection of lenses, film and bird poses. Getting close to birds is not always easy, however.
One of the best methods of getting close to birds is to try to find locations where birds are certain to approach. A birdfeeder may be the best example of such a place. When a bird is feeding, it is often very tolerant of people if it is hungry.
Any martin bird house
must be easy to clean and pack away when not in use. If yours is aluminunm, it likely has telescoping poles that allow you to raise and lower it. If if is wooden, it is liikelly heavy and with 4″ x 4″ posts supporting it.
Houses should be from 122′ to 20 ‘ above ground. Howvever, some homes have been successful at 8′ to 10′ above ground. Another alternative is to service your martin homes using a ladder and not use hinged posts to lower them too the ground.
Orioles you encounter will be seeking ripe fruit. You can slice an orange down the middle in two and hang each separate half from a tree to attract orioles. You can also buy oriole feeders
that you fill with sugar water. Other feeders are available that are designed to offer orioles jelly.
Planting bright colored fruits and flowers that bear nectar will provide food sources. Some good examples are raspberries, crab apples and trumpet vines. Once the plants are established, they will attract orioles every year.
There was a story in my local Sunday newspaper magazine section about a woman who bought a bird feeder and the squirrel who followed. She tried to chase him off at first, but in the end saw him grow to “the size of bear cub”. She even named him as you woulds a family pet.
There are many ways to try and combat unwanted squirrels. This particular person in this story chose not to offer squirrel proof bird seed or feeders. Tolerance of squirrels, to some extent, is sometimes required in a backyard feeding program.
All during the the time that birds are feasting at their bird feeders
, the flock is constantly listening closely to detect any presence of a hawk. When a hawk is detected, there is always a sudden change in the tone of the chirping. The small birds have emergency tones that are used to sound an alert.
When a hawk is found to be in the area, a small bird will change its tone to make it more difficult tell where the chirps are coming from. These birds are ventriloquists so that they don’t reveal their whereabouts to the threat.
There is no better indicator of spring than the sounds of birds chirping at the crack of dawn. The arrival of the migratory songbirds is always revealed by the sounds of their songs. You may not see them, but you know they are back f0r the season.
Spring time is many peoples favorite time of year to enjoy the beauty of nature and other creatures’ presence. As we go about our hectic day to day lives, We don’t always have time to stop and experience nature as much as we would like to. Placing feeders and log cabin birdhouses
allows us to glance out and see birds if even for only a moment each day.
